Workaholics are not heroes
How to be better at your job by ditching the addiction and focusing on yourself
I have to confess something: I’m not giving 110 percent. In fact, some days, I’m not even giving 100 percent.
I used to be the last person to leave the office. I’d get some kind of high from seeing my car in an empty parking lot. My coworkers and I would trade stories about how many holidays we spent in the office or how many meals we’ve eaten at our desks. I used to beam with pride thinking about the fact that when I left my old position, they had to hire three employees to fill the gap.
Yeah, I’m admitting it… I was one of those people.
If you’re reading this, you might have been one of those people, too. Or maybe you still are. First of all, it’s ok. Working too hard is ingrained in so many of our cultures. “Working yourself to death” is a cliché phrase for a reason. It happens too often.
There is nothing wrong with loving what you do and taking pride in a hard day’s work. But here’s the thing: there’s a huge difference between being driven or passionate and being addicted to work.
